Book Review: “You Don’t Want a Unicorn!”

Picture this. You’re walking through the park when you see a fountain. You reach in your pocket and you find a shiny penny.

Now, some of you might be thinking “Hmm… it would be PRETTY irresponsible to not toss this penny into that fountain.”
Others might stop and think, “Man, I should seize this opportunity  and wish for the most magical and legendary pet of all time, a unicorn!”

WRONG! Don’t do any of that! If you have the opportunity to wish for a unicorn, just DON’T! Okay?!

Unicorns are best to be left in the wild, they make HORRIBLE pets! They will shed sparkles everywhere, they will scratch and chew up your entire house, and they absolutely cannot be house-trained. Seriously, if you see a suspiciously delicious looking pile of cupcakes on the floor, stay away. You don’t want those.

If you’re still considering wishing for a unicorn, then you need to read Ame Dykman and Liz Climo’s You Don’t Want a Unicorn!

Ame Dykman is one of the most charming and hilarious picture book authors out there, her personality and energy fill every word of every book. Coming off of a string of beloved stories (Wolfie The Bunny and Horrible Bear!), I was excited to see what Ame had coming up next. Ladies and gents, You Don’t Want a Unicorn! did not disappoint! Ame delivers the story through the voice of an unseen narrator who urges the main character to not wish for a unicorn. The word choice and tone of the book creates many opportunities for laughter, as the main character ignores the narrators initial advice. The juxtaposition of text and illustrations create perfect comedic timing. Liz Climo’s bright and cartoony illustrations bring life and giggles to this story. My favorite parts of this book include the facial expressions of the boy and the unicorns. Every goofy grin and every panic-stricken look made me laugh out loud.

You Don’t Want a Unicorn! is one book you definitely DON’T want to miss!
